RANT N' ROAR - DAY 14
AUGUST 23
After a busy day of watching Team NL compete across a variety of venues, I was fortunate last night to slow down and enjoy a meal with our incredible Mission Staff. This dedicated group of volunteers has been working tirelessly to ensure our teams feel supported every step of the way. They’ve gone above and beyond, showing up at venues and making plenty of noise to cheer on our athletes.
Today was truly a day of gratitude. I feel so blessed to be surrounded by such fantastic people, not only our Mission Staff, but also the Host Society, Chef Teams, Mission Staff from other provinces and territories, as well as the many supporters, families, and Team NL participants. The Canada Games is something special, and I’m so proud that the people of our beautiful province have been able to experience it firsthand.
Today marks the last day of competition for many of our teams, and I’m looking forward to seeing our athletes give it their all one final time.
It was another medal winning performance by Gavin Baggs, who earned silver in the 400m WC. This brings his medal total to 4 for the 2025 Canada Games, 3 on the track and the other in the pool. Congrats Gavin!
In other events athletes braved the chilly temps to some great finishes. You could feel the excitement the entire day. The home team had a cheering squad in the stands, decked out in toques and blankets to cheer on their favourite athletes.
Amelia Bazeley, the youngest athlete competing in the entire athletics completion had a great showing in the 800m B Final with a new personal best.
Nick Hawe and Sawyer LeBlanc both ran in the 5000m with Nick bettering his personal best by 30 seconds. Molly Pomeroy set a new provincial record in the female 200m.
It’s been a great week for athletics with the last event going tomorrow morning with the male pole vault.
Cold temperatures and high winds challenged pitchers in Team NL’s 7–8 placement game against Manitoba at the Gushue Sports Complex. What followed was an offensive slugfest, with the two teams combining for 35 hits over seven innings.
Team NL struck first with two runs in the opening inning, but Manitoba responded with six, then added four more in the second for a 10–2 lead. Refusing to quit, NL battled back with four runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to narrow the gap to 10–9. Manitoba answered with three in the bottom half, but NL pushed across two more in the sixth to make it 13–11. Manitoba pulled away with a big seven-run frame in the bottom of the sixth.
Even then, Team NL showed resilience, rallying for two final runs in the seventh before falling short in a 20–13 final.
Kerry Russell led the way with two singles, a double, and a walk. Jenny Murphy and Maggie Gill added two hits and a walk each, while Kate Lombard and Rebecca McCarthy chipped in two hits apiece. Several others contributed at the plate in a true team effort.
It was a hard-fought finish and a proud ending to Team NL’s inaugural Canada Games appearance in women’s baseball.
Team NL battled hard against Team NB in their final matchup but struggled to get the bats going early. In the 5th inning, Kyle Dwyer sparked some momentum with a clutch 2-RBI hit, followed by Mark Corbett’s second home run of the tournament in the 6th, a towering 2-run blast. Despite the late push, the comeback fell just short, with Team NL dropping a 12–8 final.
The team left the field with heads held high, proud of their effort and sportsmanship. Coaches Power, Hill, and Nash, along with the players, represented Team NL with class and respect throughout the Games.
Best of luck to the boys as they now turn their focus to Nationals!
Women's volleyball rise early this morning to take on Team Yukon at 8:00am. With a back and forth thriller they take down the Yukon in the 5th and final set.
After some much needed mid-day rest the girls went back to action to fight for the 9th place. As fans packed the stands one last time at The Works Field House, Team NL once again goes to 5 sets with Team PEI, falling just short in the final set. The girls wrap up their compeition today and will enjoy the closing ceremonies tomorrow. Great team effort by our volleyball girls!!
Men's volleyball took to the NL Sports Centre early this morning versus New Brunswick where they showed their heart and pride in a 4 set battle, unforunately coming up short in a 3-1 loss. This loss sent them into the 7th/8th placing game at 7:15pm to face their West Coast rivals once again, Team BC.
The boys , along with the strong volleyball community showed up ready to take down BC once again. The story was laid out differently this time, the boys fell 3 straight sets to Team BC despite keeping all 3 sets close. The boys hold their heads high and should be proud of what they accomplished throughout the tournament. They will close out the games tomorrow at the closing ceremonies with the rest of the Team NL contingent. Great work boys!
In the battle of our smallest provinces it was PEI who came out on the right side of a 1-0 score. NL controlled the play in the first half but couldn't break the ice. Every time there was any pressure PEI would boot the ball to the sidelines. Millie Janes thought she put NL up 1-0 As she booted one past the keeper but the ref deemed it off side. The half ended at 0-0. Gina Power subbed in at half and looked to ignite the offence. But PEI held strong.
At the 60min mark PEI found themselves with two consecutive corner kicks and it was here that they broke the ice. There was nothing tender Autumn Clarke could do this one as it was a well executed corner kick. NL continued to press but could not get the equalizer. Ireland Winters had two beautiful corners in injury time but PEI was able to get the ball out of trouble. The game ended in a 1 Nil win for PEI.
This now drops the girls to the ⅞ placement game at the CBS field. Game time is 12:30pm tomorrow Sunday August 24 on the last day of the 2025 Canada Games.
The duet free event saw twins Abby & Emma Hickey and the pair of Abigail Tee & Amelia Coady shine in the pool. Both duets matched their declared and actual difficulty perfectly, leaving the girls and their coaches all smiles. The crowd was on their feet, cheering every step of the way!
Afterwards, the team met up with their teammate Emily at the Canada Games House, where they snapped some fun pictures with Alan Doyle and even a young fan. A perfect mix of sport and memories!
Final Game sees PEI 9 – NL 1
Team NL showed resilience, pouring it on in the 3rd period and battling until the final whistle, but couldn’t close the gap. Family and friends shower their appreciation of the effort and fight right to the end.
We saw growth of the team and development of a passion for the sport. The future is bright for Lacrosse in Newfoundland & Labrador!
This morning, the mountain biking team hit the trails early for a focused training session in preparation for their final competition, set to take place tomorrow. The athletes spent time on the short track, fine-tuning their skills and strategies for the big day.
With the hard work behind them, the team is looking forward to a well-deserved evening of entertainment. Tonight, they’ll be attending the Allan Doyle concert — a perfect way to relax and recharge before tomorrow's challenge.
Best of luck to all the competitors!
