DAY 8 - AUGUST 17
With Week One of the Canada Games now complete, Team NL is celebrating the incredible achievements of our athletes. From inspiring performances to unforgettable memories, our athletes proudly represented the province on home soil.
As we welcome the Week Two athletes, we look back with pride on the dedication, talent, and spirit shown by Team NL throughout the first week of competition.
There’s always a unique atmosphere around the Village on turnaround day. Our Week 1 athletes are leaving with heavy hearts, saying goodbye to the Games environment and the new friends they’ve made along the way, but also with excitement to be back at home with their families and supporters. And as one chapter closes, another begins. While Week 1 athletes move out, our Week 2 athletes will soon be arriving at the Village, ready to experience everything these home Games have to offer.
As Week 1 comes to a close, I couldn’t be more proud. The volunteers and staff have shared nothing but praise for the sportsmanship, manners, and resilience shown by our athletes. The level of competition, determination, and pride they brought to every field of play was everything we could have hoped for and more. Remember: do your best, nothing less.
To our Week 1 athletes: thank you for wearing the Team NL colours with pride and setting such a strong example for those who follow. To our Week 2 athletes: we cannot wait to welcome you into the Village here in St. John’s, to see your excitement, and to watch you embrace the incredible opportunity that is the Canada Games on home soil.
Team NL captures it's first medal on Day 1 as the home province for the 2025 Canada Games in St. John's!
It was Swimmer, Gavin Baggs, who earned a silver medal in the Men’s 400m Freestyle Para at the Aquarena. This is Gavin's fouth Games but first medal!
Team NL Swimming had a strong showing at a packed house at the Aquarena. Anna Rideout placed first in her preliminary 1500m Freestyle heat with Maddy Ladha taking third place.
In the men’s 800 freestyle Seamus Kavanagh-Penney secured a second place finish in the third heat. Nathan Wilson had a strong start in the second and place third in his heat.
In the the 4x200m Freestyle Men's, Team NL had a strong fifth place finish while the women's took sixth in their relay.
Team Newfoundland and Labrador has another reason to celebrate today, as Thomas Pelley powered his way to a bronze medal in the 50m Freestyle Special Olympics event. The victory marks his second medal of the week — and the third overall for Team NL at the 2025 Canada Games.
Just days ago, Thomas captured silver in the 100m Freestyle SO, making him one of Team NL’s standout multi-medalists. His performance in today’s final was the product of grit, focus, and a relentless drive to improve. Pelley’s achievement continues the medal momentum started by Gavin Baggs, who claimed Team NL’s first medal of the Games on opening night — a silver in the 400m Freestyle Para.
With two swimmers already standing on the podium, Team NL’s presence in the pool has been nothing short of inspiring. And the week isn’t over yet.
Team NL delivered an impressive performance today at the Fortis Canada Games Complex, defeating Team Manitoba 4-1 in a tense tie-breaking shootout before a near-capacity crowd.
Demonstrating remarkable composure, Team NL scored on their first three shots, with Quentin Seal, Luke Fahey, and Jacob Percy finding the back of the net to carry the lead. It was midfielder Thomas Foran—who scored the big goal against Quebec the night before—who sealed the deal.
Goalkeeper Tawanda Chitsike made a clutch save to shut down the Manitoba offense and secure the win, thrilling supporters in the stands. Looking ahead, Team NL will face Team NB tomorrow at 4:30pm at King George V Soccer Stadium. The team’s momentum and spirited play make them one to watch—go Team NL!
Women's Box Lacrosse played their first match today against Manitoba. The first goal was scored by Sophie Dillon (for the first ever Team NL goal!) with assist by Cali Fitzgerald, and the second scored by Adrienne Shannahan unassisted.
The team showed huge improvement today and it showed with their incredible performance. Determination and pride in representing Team NL was worn with pride and determination on all of their jerseys today.
It took almost a full week but we have finally experienced 2 of the 4 things St. John’s has to offer in the summer.
The Men's Beach Volleyball Team battled the wind again but got back on the winning track taking down the Yukon (21-15,21-16). They are into the 9/10th placement game on Saturday at 11:00am vs Saskatchewan.
The Women's Beach Volleyball battled the second weather event as the sky opened up and the rains came down. Showing their resilience they took down Yukon (21-15,21-7).
Despite the rain, our fantastic fans (who were finally allowed to reenter) were on hand thundering loudly as they encouraged the girls to rebound from a disappointing day on Thursday.
The women also play on Saturday at 11:00am. Their opponent is PEI.
Please drop out and watch both teams on Saturday but (spoiler alert) bring your trap door undies, trigger mitts, and beanies as the forecasted high is 15 degrees Celsius!
Team NL showed grit in a 10-3 battle against Team NB on Monday. Graham Noseworthy struck out three over four-plus innings, while Luke Hatcher and Sam Rideout each notched two hits. Michael Reilly drove in a run, and the team showcased speed with five stolen bases, including two from Kieran Cutler. Despite the loss, their aggressive play and timely hitting were bright spots as they look to carry that momentum into Tuesday’s 7 pm matchup against Team PEI at Team Gushue Complex.
Team NL Sailing is quite pleased with their first day of racing. Joel Smith competed in the ILCA 6 division and had a seventh place finish while Ben McDonald and Alex Fitzgerald had 2nd, 4th and 3rd place finishes in each of their races in the 29er’s division. The boats are back on the water again tomorrow.
