RANT N' ROAR - DAY TWO
AUGUST 11
Team Newfoundland and Labrador’s Thomas Pelley added another medal to his Canada Games collection, earning silver in the Men’s 100m Freestyle Special Olympics at the 2025 Games. A standout performer since 2022, Pelley previously captured silver in both the 50m and 100m freestyle, plus bronze in the 100m backstroke. “I tried my best and I am happy with my race,” he said. Coach Keelin Tucker praised his effort, noting, “He swam his heart out and it shows that dedicated training is key to success.” Chef de Mission Jamie Randell called it “an incredible continuation of the momentum from Niagara.” This is Team NL’s second swimming medal of the Games, following Gavin Baggs’ silver in the Men’s 400m Freestyle Para. With the week’s events still ahead, Team NL athletes are proudly showcasing their skill, determination, and provincial pride on the national stage.
All of Team NL Swimming had a busy but very successful day in the pool, with 18 swimmers advancing to individual finals—including six in the highly competitive “A” finals. Alexandra Campbell and James Traverse both finished 8th in the 200m backstroke finals. Gavin Baggs earned a strong 4th place in the 100m freestyle, while Nathan Luscomb finished 5th in the same event.
Across the board, Team NL swimmers set numerous personal bests, showcasing their hard work and dedication. We are incredibly proud of all our athletes, coaches, and manager for their efforts. The excitement continues—can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
My heart is already overflowing after just one incredible day of competition! What a thrilling and unforgettable moment in the pool as Team NL’s own Gavin Baggs powered his way to a silver medal in the 400m Freestyle Para Men’s event — a performance that had the home crowd beaming with pride. While this was certainly the highlight of the day, there was so much more to celebrate.
I was able to catch plenty of Team NL action — Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Baseball, Softball, and Box Lacrosse all hit the field, court, and sand yesterday. Kieran Cutler had the fans on their feet with a second inning Grand Slam at St. Pat’s. The crowd in Paradise came alive when Sophie Dillon scored the first-ever goal for Team NL in Box Lacrosse.
Today promises another action-packed schedule, with Road Cycling, Rugby 7s, Soccer, Sailing, and Tennis making their debuts. If Day One is any indication, this is going to be a Games to remember!
Team NL showed grit in a 10-3 battle against Team NB on Monday. Graham Noseworthy struck out three over four-plus innings, while Luke Hatcher and Sam Rideout each notched two hits. Michael Reilly drove in a run, and the team showcased speed with five stolen bases, including two from Kieran Cutler. Despite the loss, their aggressive play and timely hitting were bright spots as they look to carry that momentum into Tuesday’s 7 pm matchup against Team PEI at Team Gushue Complex.
Team NL Men’s Soccer opened their 2025 Canada Summer Games campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Team Manitoba. With momentum building, Team NL now shifts focus to a crucial matchup against undefeated Team Quebec tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at King George V Field. Team Manitoba and Équipe Québec, who were warming up, got out on the turf and calm together for a good old fashioned kitchen party. A truly beautiful moment that can only happen in the Canada Games!

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Men’s Rugby Sevens team opened the Canada Games with a thrilling 17–14 victory over Nova Scotia, sealed by a final-minute defensive stand. The win set the tone for a competitive day. Despite a tough 39–0 loss to BC, the squad found lessons to build on. They bounced back in their third match on August 11, overpowering Yukon 39–0 with dominant speed, depth, and teamwork. The mix of resilience, skill, and determination has made a bold statement at the Games, leaving fans eager to see how far this team can go.
Women's Softball showed determination despite a 10-0 setback against Team Quebec on Monday. Pitcher Brooklyn Shortt battled through early pressure, while Lila Buckle recorded the team’s lone hit, going 1-for-2. The defense turned a double play to halt a rally, and the team looks to build on those moments as they prepare for their next matchup against Team Ontario on Tuesday at 1:30. Their record is now 1-2.
Race day on the Team Gushue Highway produced some solid finishes for Team NL athletes. Cass Parsons turned in a time just over 37 minutes while his teammate Lincoln Harris came in just over 40 minutes.
Portia Grace Curnoe-Afanassiev was our top female cyclist, followed by Courtney Russell. They all posted great times and cycled technically sound races!
Looking forward to the Road Race on Wednesday!
Male basketball took full advantage of an off day in competition to do some strategy specific film study and work on their sets in their shoot around. The rest of the day has been spent enjoying the amenities of athletes village and participate in probably the most intense competition at Canada Games, the Pin Trading. Overall a wonderful day enjoying the entirety of the Canada Games experience.
