RANT N' ROAR - DAY FIVE
AUGUST 14
Team Newfoundland and Labrador has another reason to celebrate today, as Thomas Pelley powered his way to a bronze medal in the 50m Freestyle Special Olympics event. The victory marks his second medal of the week — and the third overall for Team NL at the 2025 Canada Games.
Just days ago, Thomas captured silver in the 100m Freestyle SO, making him one of Team NL’s standout multi-medalists. His performance in today’s final was the product of grit, focus, and a relentless drive to improve. Pelley’s achievement continues the medal momentum started by Gavin Baggs, who claimed Team NL’s first medal of the Games on opening night — a silver in the 400m Freestyle Para.
With two swimmers already standing on the podium, Team NL’s presence in the pool has been nothing short of inspiring. And the week isn’t over yet.
A bit of good news came from Paradise Park yesterday, as the Beach Volleyball competition was able to proceed. While no spectators were permitted as a precaution, we hope our athletes still felt the full support of Team Newfoundland and Labrador. Even better—our Sailing team will be back on the water today! Yesterday, Team NL competed with intensity and pride, and it was inspiring to see so many of our athletes in the stands, cheering on other sports.
As competition begins to wind down for many of our teams, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience everything else the Games have to offer. Make it a point to check out other sports and take part in the festivals. Best of luck to those competing today—especially those wrapping up their events. Show up, give it your all, and leave your mark on these Canada Games.
Team NL wrapped up their final day in the pool with incredible performances and plenty of energy on deck.
A Finals Results:
Nate Luscombe – 50m Freestyle (5th), 200m IM (7th)

The Mixed 4x100m Freestyle team of James Traverse, Noah Gates, Alex Campbell, and Kallie Symonds won their heat and placed 6th overall.
With the pool events complete, Team NL now turns its focus to open water swimming tomorrow at Rotary Sunshine Park — Men’s race at 9:00 a.m., Women’s at 10:00 a.m.
Newfoundland and Labrador trailed Manitoba by just one point after the first quarter, then surged ahead to a 36–28 halftime lead. In a nail-biting finish, Team NL held strong to secure a 67–63 victory.
Carissa Tucker delivered a dominant performance, racking up 29 points and an incredible 24 rebounds. Nyah Ryan added 12 points, while Allison O’Neil contributed 11.
The win secured a 9th-place finish, marking a strong conclusion to Team NL’s Canada Games journey.
Male basketball finished their tournament the same way they started, with a convincing win over the Northwest Territories. This secured a 9th place finish at the Games.
This was not the story of the night for this group. They displayed great pride, teamwork and commitment to their craft by staying the course and playing a clean and well executed game and not packing it in after two tough defeats.
The story of the night was the smiles, the support of the families and friends and the culmination of their hard work and preparation over the past number of years. The love that was on display amongst players, coaching staff, family and friends was evident. Tonight the story is about the unity of the group. Way to make Newfoundland and Labrador proud boys! 2,1, Hard Work!
Team NL’s Men’s Soccer squad fell 3-0 to Team New Brunswick tonight at KGV Field, with a near-capacity crowd in attendance. Despite a spirited effort, NL couldn’t break through NB’s strong defense and efficient attack. The loss sets up a 7th-place matchup tomorrow against the loser of the Ontario–PEI game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Fortis Canada Games Complex, where Team NL will look to finish their tournament on a winning note.
The Team NL Box Lacrosse team played their last game today against PEI for their placement match. The girls lost to PEI, but not before putting up a fight! The girls fought right to the last moment playing their hardest and showcasing their defensive skills.
Team NL Sailing hit the water today after races were postponed for the past couple of days. It was a windy day on the course making race conditions difficult. Team NL is looking forward to the next couple of days of competition as the Games continue.
Today was a rough day for both Beach Volleyball teams.
After winning their opening match over NWT (24-26,21-13,15-10) the men’s team moved into the qualification round to face PEI. With the winds blowing the men fell (18-21,13-21). Their chance at the playoffs and a top 8 finish were blown away.
The women moved into qualification also looking to capture a top 8 placing but were swept away by a testy NB team (20-22,12-21).
Both teams play consolation games to close out the games as they look to secure their ranking for the next Canada Games.
Hopefully evacuation orders will be lifted overnight and our faithful fans will be able to return to give Team NL a valiant send off.
The Women's Rugby Sevens team has wrapped up their competition and are now soaking in all that the Canada Games have to offer! Today, they explored various venues and cheered on fellow Team NL athletes across other events.
An incredible journey for these athletes—way to go, Girls! Enjoy every moment, create new memories, and experience everything this exciting national event has in store. Keep showing your NL pride!
Our Men's Baseball team enjoyed a day off today from competition. While taking in their rest day they we found contributing to the Games Give Back Inititiave, they packed a hatch full of shampoo, body wash, deodorant and more to Thrive, showing the true generosity of Newfoundlanders. They play tomorrrow at 10:00am vs. New Brunswick at St. Pat's Ball Park.
