RANT N' ROAR - DAY SIX
AUGUST 15
Congratulations to Thomas Pelley on earning his second medal of the Games, capturing bronze last night. This marks the third medal for Team Newfoundland and Labrador, and we couldn’t be more proud.
Yesterday, many of our athletes wrapped up their competitions and took the opportunity to enjoy all that the Games have to offer. In the evening, our Mission Staff gathered to celebrate the incredible coaches and managers who have dedicated months and in many cases, years to the Canada Games program. These individuals devote countless hours to their athletes and their own professional growth, making significant personal sacrifices to coach at the high-performance level. They truly deserve every accolade you can offer. Please take a moment to thank them - the Games simply wouldn’t happen without their commitment.
I’m looking forward to seeing our Team NL athletes compete today in what may be their final competition of these Games. Remember to do your best, nothing less!
It took almost a full week but we have finally experienced 2 of the 4 things St. John’s has to offer in the summer.
The Men's Beach Volleyball Team battled the wind again but got back on the winning track taking down the Yukon (21-15,21-16). They are into the 9/10th placement game on Saturday at 11:00am vs Saskatchewan.
The Women's Beach Volleyball battled the second weather event as the sky opened up and the rains came down. Showing their resilience they took down Yukon (21-15,21-7).
Despite the rain, our fantastic fans (who were finally allowed to reenter) were on hand thundering loudly as they encouraged the girls to rebound from a disappointing day on Thursday.
The women also play on Saturday at 11:00am. Their opponent is PEI.
Please drop out and watch both teams on Saturday but (spoiler alert) bring your trap door undies, trigger mitts, and beanies as the forecasted high is 15 degrees Celsius!
Team NL pulled off a 4–3 win after going into the last match tied 3–3. The women’s doubles team came up big in the final match, showing great teamwork and determination to clinch the victory.
Next match is tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. against Team New Brunswick.
Team NL sailors were back out on the water today with more ILCA 6 division and 29er division races. Racing conditions were a bit more favourable at the start of the day allowing teams to get a couple of races completed. Thunder and lightning storms rolled through the CBS area causing the cancellation of the races for the remainder of the day. The final day of competition is tomorrow with Team NL still in the hunt for medals.
The final day of swimming at the 2025 Canada Games was a splash of success for Team NL. In the scenic 3K open water race at Sunshine Camp, Nathan Wilson placed 12th, Owen Carew 20th, Maddy Ladha 11th, and Emilia Young 14th. Fantastic efforts all around!
Following their impressive performances, the entire Team NL Swim Team celebrated by heading to Canada Games House for an afternoon of fun, games, and great memories together.
In the Men’s Soccer 7th/8th place matchup at the 2025 Canada Summer Games, Team NL battled Team PEI in a hard-fought contest. Despite a strong effort, PEI came out on top with a 3-2 victory, netting two quick goals in the second half to secure the win after a short rain delay late in the game. Thomas Foran and Cole Hynes found the back of the net for NL, showcasing the team’s skill and determination. With this result, Team NL finished the competition in 8th place. The province is proud of the dedication, hard work, and talent the players displayed throughout the Games, representing Newfoundland and Labrador with heart and pride.
Team NL closed out the tournament on a high note with a 9-5 win over Team New Brunswick at St. Pat’s Ballpark. Jumping ahead early with RBIs from Jack McCarthy and Aiden Power, the team battled through ties and lead changes before Kieran Cutler’s two-run homer in the fourth put them ahead for good. Strong pitching from Luke Hatcher, Alex Drover, and Graham Noseworthy kept Team New Brunswick in check, while Team NL's offense piled up 12 hits and five stolen bases to seal a confident, upbeat finish to their Canada Games campaign.
The Women's Rugby Sevens team are going full throttle to wrap up their Canada Games adventure on the highest of highs! You’ll spot them in the stands, cheering loudly for fellow Team NL athletes, spreading energy and team pride everywhere they go. Some are deep into the pin-trading craze, others are soaking up the electric atmosphere with teammates and brand-new friends.
They’ve played hard, supported harder, and made memories that will last a lifetime. The Games may be winding down, but their impact, and spirit, will live on. Congrats, girls… you have represented our province well. We are so proud!
Men's basketball spent their first rest day with some well earned rest and relaxation. They were excited to receive their Canada Games alumni pin along with a fresh NL piece for the always exciting pin trading.
They then returned the favour to their friends on the pitch by coming out and supporting male soccer who were loud and proud at their games. Supporting team NL is a huge part of the CG and the boys did so well. Go NL!
Our cycling team went for a spin on their bikes, during which they made a donation to Thrive, a non-profit organization which supports young people who live in poverty. The rest of the day was spent visiting different sports. Dropped by to support our soccer and baseball teams, did some serious pin trading, and visited Canada Games House. Tomorrow, our cyclist will be taking part in one of the most exciting events at the Games. The CRIT! Flying around Harbour Drive and Water Street! It’s a great spectator sport.
At halftime of the basketball semifinal between Quebec and Alberta, Team NL Chef de Mission Jamie Randell was treated to a special moment, her brother, David, performed a solo kata for the crowd.
David is a proud participant with the Special Olympics group, Budokai Warriors. The Randell family has a long history with the Canada Games, as David is the third sibling to be involved: Jamie competed in hockey in 1995, while their sister Jodi played softball in 1993.
