RANT N' ROAR - DAY 13
AUGUST 22
We had a very busy day yesterday for Team NL, with many of our teams in competition. Athletics and Mountain Bike took a training day, and I know they’re eager to get back at it today. Our Mission Staff was out in full force, moving from venue to venue to show support for our incredible athletes.
A special shoutout goes to the families and supporters filling venues all across the city this week—your encouragement means the world to our athletes.
As we pass the midway point of Week 2, I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank the amazing volunteers who are working tirelessly to deliver an unforgettable Games experience. Their efforts not only keep everything running smoothly but also create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for athletes and visitors alike.
I can’t wait to see what special moments today will bring!
It was a medal winning day again at the track for Gavin Baggs, with a silver in the male 1500m wheelchair race. This is Gavin’s third medal of this Canada Games!
Despite the cool temps, Team NL turned up the heat on the track in all events. Samantha Walsh finished 3rd in the 100m Special Olympics B Final. Molly Pomroy crossed the line in third place in the female 400m B final. Sawyer LeBlanc completed the male 1500m in 7th place.
Both male and female 4x100m relay competed later in the evening with great races. Female crossed in 6th place, setting a new provincial record, which they set earlier this week.
Shoutout to Seamus Reardon for an exceptional showing in the male 100m Ambulatory.
Everyone who completed today brought their best efforts and represented the home province with pride. Some athletes set new personal bests along the way. Athletics finishes up tomorrow with the last day of competition.
It was a packed house at the Field House this afternoon as Team NL Men’s Volleyball faced off against Alberta. The crowd brought the energy, and the boys fed off it, refusing to back down in a tough matchup.
Alberta came out strong in the opening set, taking it 25-12, but Team NL regrouped and pushed back hard. The second and third sets were tight battles, with NL fighting to the very end before falling 25-23 and 25-21.
Carter Lake stood out with a stellar performance, carrying the team through key moments and showing incredible determination.
Though the result didn’t go their way, the fight, resilience, and home-court spirit were undeniable.
Our ladies entered the tournament with confidence, hoping to ride the momentum of their earlier success all the way into the quarterfinals. Each match’s success fuels their belief that the goal they set for themselves was within reach, and the packed house gave them the electricity they thought they needed.
But the powerhouse Nova Scotia team was a challenge maybe too great to overcome this time. Despite a herculean effort, including a third set win that had the fans up and out of their seats, the dream of advancing to the medal round fell short.
However, even though they fell short of this goal, they gave every fan that showed up to cheer them on memories they will get to share with their children and grandchildren.
They made everyone proud of their resilience , work ethic, and dedication to their teammates, coaches and the crowd to do everything possible to reach their goal.
The next step now is to rank the highest they can in the coming days. Let’s go girls. Keep making us proud!
Mia Fradsham delivered a strong performance in the Solo Consolation Flight, followed by Abigail Porter in the Solo Medal Flight, where she impressed with her precision and artistry in the pool.
After wrapping up the solo events, Team NL took to the pool for the Team Preliminaries. The swimmers brought energy, precision, and artistry as they showcased their routine on the national stage. The evening closed with Team NL making waves showcasing their power and creativity in their Acrobatic Routine.
A memorable finish to the solo events and a night of teamwork in the pool! A full day of skill, strength, and artistry from our swimmers!
A strong performance to set the tone for what’s ahead!
Team NL Golf played its final round today. Our players came out full steam ahead. Some Birdies, some pars, but most of all our genuine Newfoundland spirit. This group of athletes are full of life and laughs and gave 110% till the last hole! Golf can go either way on any given day, but that never stopped our team from start to finish. Congratulations Team NL Golf you did great.

The female team completed their final match of their preliminary round today versus Manitoba. Although they put up a tough effort, Manitoba did come out on the winning side.
Both teams went into the placement rounds early on day 5. The girls faced the New Brunswick squad, while the males faced Prince Edward Island. After a tough week, the girls left it all on the mat however, a highlight from this match was Hannah Coombs, who really put up a strong effort in the losing cause.
On the male side, although they ended up losing to Prince Edward Island, Afshin Hakimi had an electric performance in his match. After recovering from an injury early in round 1, he was able to pin his opponent in round 2, earning the victory, which sent electricity through the glacier for the home team
Saturday’s action will be individual matches beginning at 10:15 as the final competition comes to close.
Team NL came alive in the fourth inning, exploding at the plate to take control of the game. With hot bats delivering clutch RBIs and steady defense backing them up, the boys never looked back.
Strong pitching kept Alberta’s offense quiet, while timely hits across the lineup fueled a big inning that set the tone. When it was all said and done, Team NL secured a decisive 6-1 win in front of an energized crowd.
Today marked Race Two for Team NL MTB, featuring the always high-energy Team Relays! The atmosphere was electric, and our riders did not disappoint.
Our women's team, made up of just two athletes, showed incredible grit and determination. Lydia Parsons took on both Lap 1 and Lap 3, while Sophie Cote powered through Lap 2. Despite the extra workload, both athletes crushed it - each posting personal bests on the course by over 30 seconds per 5km lap!
The boys' team also had a phenomenal day, with every rider hitting a personal best. Their strong performance saw them finishing ahead of Team PEI and Yukon, a fantastic result that reflects their hard work.
We’re incredibly proud of everyone’s effort and are looking forward to seeing more action this Sunday during the Short Course Races. These races are fast, fun, and always thrilling to watch — we hope to see lots of support out there!
Go Team NL!
With no competition scheduled today, our women’s baseball team made the most of their time with an extra practice session. The athletes spent two hours fine-tuning all areas of their game before heading back to the Village for a well-deserved meal and some rest and recovery.
They’ll be back in action tomorrow in the 7th–8th place game at 12:00 p.m. at Gushue Sports Complex. Good luck, Team NL!
With no competition on the schedule today, the boys took some time to recharge and focus on team bonding. They held an outdoor practice to stay sharp and loose, then explored the Athletes’ Village and checked out other sports.
It was also a great chance to cheer on fellow Team NL athletes, showing their support across different venues. A day well spent before returning to competition!
All soccer competitions had a break in schedule today and will return to action tomorrow. With the break the girls had some free time to reset and enjoy a day of to do their own thing and check out some other venues.
The women will return to the field tomorrow at 1:30pm verses our Atlantic Rival , team PEI, at King George V Soccer Stadium with the winner advancing to play for 5th/6th placement game. The girls look to rebound after a heartbreaking defeat yesterday. If you're a fan of soccer you won't want to miss this game tomorrow. Go TeamNL!
