This afternoon we finally were able to welcome our Alpine team back to PEI for the last few days of the Games. 

They finished up competition at Crabbe Mountain and are going to conclude their week in Brookvale this weekend.

It was a FANtastic Friday for TeamNL’s Male Curlers!!

Both TeamNL and TeamQC had their fans on the edge of their seats from the opening rock to the final skip’s stone in the 8th!

The tone of the game was set when TeamNL’s lead, Isaac Manuel, placed his first two shots on the button fully buried behind a QC guard. Our boys scored an opening deuce forcing Team QC to play catch-up for the entire game.

The second end was blanked. Both teams traded singles in the 3rd and 4th ends. TeamNL was leading by 2 going into the midgame break. With the hammer, QC executed an impressive score of 2 by doubling off 2 NL stones that were in the four foot. After the 5th the game was tied at 3.

Both teams again traded points in the 6th and 7th ends. With hammer in the 8th TeamNL needed to score a single for the win.

TeamQC had a single centre guard just outside the 12 foot. They attempted to place another high guard just over the hog line with their remaining stones. TeamNL’s second Jack Kinsella and Third Spencer Tipple executed perfect peels on QC’s guard attempts.

QC’s skip played his well executed final shot, a draw to bite the top 4 foot. With the game on the line, TeamNL’s skip Parker Tipple had to draw a good chunk of the four foot for the win.

Right out of his hand the sweepers were calling T-line weight. As the rock approached the house a full team effort was needed to sweep their skip’s rock to the 4 foot. Shot made! The Silver Fox Arena erupted in cheers from the many NL fans who were in attendance.

TeamNL has made playoffs and will face TeamON 9 am tomorrow morning!!

After some fresh snow overnight, our skiers had their first free technique event of the games. The girls were up first, skiing 10km. All had great a great ski, and Georgia Wiseman crossed the finish line for for our NL skiers with a very strong performance. Up next was the male event, who had to complete a 15km course. Another great race by all, with Isaac and Alexander Merrigan finishing at almost the same time, as our top NL finishers. It was Jeremy’s turn to have a rest day, but he was there to cheer the team on. 

Tomorrow is the 5km race for Jeremy, followed by the team relay event! Go Team NL!! 

The NL Men’s Boxing Team had a training and rest day today. Mike Gosine was suppose to fight an Alberta opponent on Friday night but sadly, the Team AB fighter was unable to compete.  

Mike will now fight for the Bronze Medal on Saturday night in the 75kg weight class against a fighter from Team Manitoba!

It was back to MacLauclan Arena in Charlottetown for Team NL today as they faced PEI for their placement game. They arrived at the arena feeling very positive and excited for today’s game. Team NL started off slow and the first period ended with PEI up 1-0. Not long into the second period Cassie Drover scored for Team NL and in the third we had Olivia Sparkes and Mollie Power each scoring one. The final score was 3-1 for Team NL. This places them 9th in the country, improving their ranking over the 2019 Games. 

After the game the girls hung out with their parents and then they all met up and went to the Canada Games House to spend quality time with their biggest fans. 

Lily Evans and Mark Butt skated their way to a Bronze Medal in the Pre Novice Pairs competition today in North Rustico, PEI! Lily and Mark performed a free program with included an exciting double twist, throw double lutz jump, side-side-double flip and lutz jumps combined with strong overhead lifts and great musicality. It is inspiring to see Lily and Mark stand on the podium accepting their bronze medal! We are so proud of their outstanding achievement!!! 

Rachael Tuff finished her Games in 7th place following her Pre Novice Women’s Free Program. Rachael moved up 2 places in the standings today  with a strong  program which included a double axel jump, a double axel/double toe loop jump combinations also with a full roster of double jumps, beautiful spins and intricate footwork while highlighting the subtle nuances of her choreography. 

Jasmine Wheadon skated her way to a score of  56.11in the Pre Novice Women’s Free Program which combined with her Short Program result gives her a final placement of 10th, up 1 place from the Short Program. Jasmine skated an exciting program which included triple salchow, double axels, along with a full repertoire of double jumps and multi-position spins combined with detailed, well-executed choreography  . 

Way to go Rachael and Jasmine on your Top 10 Final Standings!!! 

Lily, Mark, Rachael and Jasmine are looking forward to enjoying the next several days with their teammates taking in as much of the Games experience as possible, cheering on Team NL in various sports along with taking in the social and cultural events taking place in the Athletes’ Village.

Congratulations to all members of the figure skating team, they are well-trained, fierce competitors who represented Newfoundland and Labrador with determination and pride!

Today, our Badminton team played 3 rounds in the team competition. Although they dropped the first 2 against PEI and SK, they won the final encounter against the North West Territories to move on to play tomorrow. This moves our badminton team into the 9-13 placement stage, which is a program best. 

Big thanks to Team Cross Country Ski who came out to cheer the team on. 

Kate Paterson and Sam Follett clued up their Games this evening at the Montague Curling Club finishing in 10th place. They took on the Host team in the placement game in front of lots of local fans. 

PEI took a quick lead in the first end, but Sam and Kate each made nice shots in the second to bring the game back to even. 

After 3 steals, they were up 6 - 3, but PEI just wouldn't quit and tied up the game after an unfortunate miss in 7. The final end saw a lot of rocks in play. The final point came down to a nail biting measurement for the game that just didn't go TeamNLs way. 

You did us proud Team Patterson/Follett and thanks for helping to welcome Mixed Doubles Curling into the Canada Winter Games. 

What was a six flags rollercoaster-level, hard packed and sculpted to perfection snowboard cross, pillowed into a Disneyland train tour course overnight due to the fresh snow, high winds, and warmer temps. Athletes from across the nation had to work together to pack down the route today in preparation for the Canada Games boarder cross event. Although many athletes had to hop and scooch at times to reach the bottom, spirits remained high and sportmanship was shown across the resort, especailly at the finishline. The fans erupted when Team NL Snowboard’s underage athlete Elizabeth Lavoie effectively pumped her way into the SBX finals.
