Chef's Corner

Team NL arrived safe and sound last night in Charlottetown, PEI after a short delay leaving St. John's. They were met on the tarmac with blustery weather, but smiling faces of the Charlottetown airport staff, and even more friendly greetings from host society volunteers as they entered the terminal to eventually be transported to the Athletes Village. We appreciate the patience to all involved as we got our bearings, our luggage, and our contingent found their rooms for the next week.

Today, some sports will be practicing and training, others have an open day, but all will be exploring the campus and what the athletes village has to offer as the excitement builds for tonights opening ceremonies!

early rise for our female curlers

The Canada Games NL Ladies Curling Team had an early rise today as they travelled to the Silver Fox Curling Rink in Summerside for an early morning practice.

This is the first time the girls have played out of the Silver Fox Entertainment Complex and it was important to check out the ice and stones. The practice also allowed the girls an opportunity to proudly wear their new NL team uniform!

Table tennis takes in the venue

Our table tennis team was in for some training this morning at the PEI convention centre. Everything went well, they loved the venue and positivity is in the air as they are excited to start competition.

Speed skater is doing some fine tuning

The lone short-track speed skater representing Team NL at the 2023 Canada Games is Noah Bolton. He competes in the traditional 500m, 1000m, and 1500m events, along with the 3000m points race. Most folks might not know that speed skates require extreme technical precision (especially after travelling) to get the bolts and blades set up perfectly. Today and tomorrow, he is working on getting that perfect set up. Fingers crossed that by Monday (day 1 of the competition), Bolton has his bolts on just right.

Wheelchair basketball has first practice slot of the day

1,2,3,4….Newfoundland and Labrador! The athletes on the Wheelchair Basketball Team had a blast at the opening ceremonies. After a practice session on day one at Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre, they have a classification practice on Sunday and then open up their competition against NB on Monday. They are looking forward to their games, and also cheering their Team NL and Team NS athletes.

BIATHLON GETS A LAY OF THE LAND

Our Biathlon athletes were out in the frigid temperatures today, checking out the venue and the course as they prepare for their upcoming competition. Their sights are set (no pun intended) on being as prepared as possible for the upcoming week!

Our artistic gymnastics squad had their first training session of the games today ; no days off for this uber competitive group. Our female team even had the chance to take a group photo with our Atlantic Canadian neighbors, exemplifying parts of the TrueSport principles, in the true spirit of competition.

Karate hits the tatami

It was a training day for our Karate athletes... their Coach and Manager had this to say:

On day one of our participation at the 2023 Canada Games in PEI, the Team NL athletes for the sport of Karate arrive at Credit Union Place. They are here for their first day of training. The lights and energy fill the dome as the athletes warm up and practice on the Tatami. This is the first time that Karate has ever been a sport in the Canada Winter Games. Coach Nathaniel Besso, leads a team of 7 athletes to participate in the games. Ryan Crocker, 16 (Kumite), Jane Fancy 16, (Kata), Alexander Hollett, 16 (Kata), Jack Noftall, 16 (Kumite), Emma Pittman, 16 (Kumite), Alex Ryan, 16 (Kumite) and Noah Ryan, 16 (Kumite). They are also accompanied by Team Manager Lee-Anne Fancy. The athletes have a great training session! Now they are looking forward to the excitement of the Opening Ceremonies tonight. We are off to a great start!

Squash is getting loose on the courts

Our Squash team took to the courts today for their only training session of the Games. Everyone had the opportunity to work out the kinks and stretch their legs from yesterday's travel day. They kick off competition tomorrow afternoon at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown.
