Chef's Corner

Welcome Week 2 Team NL athletes, coaches, managers and support staff.  Despite your later than expected arrival you were obviously still enthusiastic and excited to be here. Our female hockey team is jumping right into competition today at 12:30 while the remainder of you will be spending the day preparing for competition.  Our Alpine skiing team had a particularly late night as they made their way to the Satellite Village in New Brunswick.  It was wonderful to see the excitement in those first few hours at the Village.  Pin trading is already in full swing!  Have a great first day familiarizing yourselves with your competition venues.  I am looking forward to seeing you all compete throughout the week.

Judo kicks off Games with a solid training day

Day one complete, and the athletes had a good first day. Training at the PEI convention center went great. One more day of training tomorrow before the competition starts on Wednesday. The Atheletes are out and about now, looking forward to cheering on the other Team NL sports. Go TeamNL!


Male curling takes in this weeks venue

TeamNL made their first visit to the Silver Fox Arena this morning. They threw for their pre-spiel practice early this afternoon. The ice is still undergoing maintenance after a condenser breakdown that was followed by a 30 minute power outage. The Ice Maker is confident things will be back to game shape by tomorrow morning. Everyone is pumped and ready for the first draw against SK tomorrow afternoon. Let’s go TeamNL!!

Boxing taking full advantage of the games experience

The NL Men’s Boxing team has arrived at the Canada Games and are eager to get started. The team had an early workout today as they prepare for their first match on Tuesday evening!


The boys and their coaching staff also took time in the afternoon to cheer on their fellow NL teammates as they watched Team NL compete in Female Hockey.


Tonight each boxer will learn their opening matchup with preliminary bouts scheduled to start on Tuesday evening at 6 pm at the Summerside Sports Dome!

Bluebird day for training at brookvale

After a little minor delay on the arrival of wax/gear boxes, skiers were in great spirits and eager to get out on the course for the first day of training. 

It was a cool day at Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park, but a couple laps quickly had athletes warmed up and ready to go. Great snow conditions, blue skies and a great hot meal at the venue had smiles on everyone’s faces. 

Tomorrow is the first day of competition, with the classic interval start events for both male and female with another blue bird day forecasted. Our para-Nordic sit ski competition starts Wednesday. Go Team NL! 

mixed curling duo take on montague for training

Mixed Curling duo Kate Paterson and Sam Follett were in Montague, PEI early today to get a feel for the ice before competition starts tomorrow. 

This venue wasn't used in last week's female curling competition, so they are egar to host such high level of competition this week.

Draw One for Paterson and Follett is tomorrow morning where they will tae on TeamSK.

FEmale hockey team start the games off with a bang

Our Female Hockey Team had an early rise today as they started their day off with a 8am on ice practice session. They then went on to enjoy breakfast together as a team. They were both excited and nervous as they prepared for their first game against TeamNWT. 

Team NL eased into the Game and seemed to get over the jitters early coming out on top with a final score of 9-0. Shots on net were 73-4 in favour of Team NL. The girls set up some great offensive plays and played a strong defensive game. They take on Team Yukon tomorrow where they are hoping to earn their second win!

Ice is feeling great in north rustico for figure skaters

Team NL Figure Skating started their first day of the 2023 Canada Winter Games with a training day. Following their first sessions the athletes report they are eager to compete on such beautifully made soft skating ice! Our skaters are enjoying meeting up with friends from across the country and new friendships are being made from coast to coast to coast. 

Pin trading is in full swing and very competitive! The rink is filled with excitement and competition energy Team NL figure  skaters are eager to compete and are looking forward to an awesome week at The Games! 

long travel day leads to late morning training

After an extra long day of travel and a good rest, Team NL alpine hit the slopes on this blue bird day for training day at Crabbe mountain in NB. 

The snow was great and the team is looking forward to kicking off with Super G competition tomorrow. 

inaugural snowboard team hits first training runs

With the sun shinning bright, the first ever TeamNL Snowboard Athletes took to the hill to test out the Canada Games Slopestyle course. They threw it down with riders from across the nation in preparation for tomorrows competition. The following athletes will represent Newfoundland & Labrador for slopestyle tomorrow:

- NL females: Andi Osmond bib #7, Maggie Gill bib #12, and Elizabeth Lavoie bib #15

- NL males heat 1: Caleb MacDonald bib #10 and Liam Fenske-Allison bib #12

- NL males heat 2: Finn Howell bib #27 and Justin Motty bib #28 

badminton gets tuned up to begin competition

Badmintons training day was a big success in the beautiful Chi- Wan Young Facility. We even got the chance to do some practice games with Team NB. Excited and ready for competition to start tomorrow.
