RANT N' ROAR - DAY FIFTEEN

GOSINE UNANIMOUS AMONGST JUDGES AND CROWD

It comes to an end tonight for the Team NL Men’s Boxing Team at the 2023 Canada Games…. and what a finish it was!

Mike Gosine, participating in the 75 kg weight class had an incredible bout defeating a Team BC boxer and giving our province a Bronze Medal.  The last time we medaled was 2007!   What am incredible accomplishment !

Congratulation to Mike Cosine, Riley Yetman and  Mason McGrath!  These boxers were truly an inspirational group of young men!  The coaching staff of Todd Rideout and Tommy Hann should be congratulated.  They have certainly earned the respect of all involved!!

Well done Team NL! We are all so proud!

Chef's Corner

Another successful day yesterday capped with a bronze medal by pre-novice figure skating pairs Mark Butt from Bloomfield and Lily Evan from Pouch Cove. Several of our teams posted wins, advancing them further into their competition. Congratulations to all. You continue to make our province proud. We have several critical competitions in play today so please get out and support for fellow Team NL members. This is the final stretch and the support from Team NL has been outstanding right from Day 1.  Go Team NL Go!

EVENT AND COMPETITION SCHEDULE

Ski cross training day for alpine team

Today the Alpine Athletes spent their first day at Mark Arendz Provincial Park. This was the first day for Ski Cross for our Alpine crew!  All athletes participated in training in the morning and qualification runs in the afternoon.

Everyone is super excited for the Ski Cross Races tomorrow!

Cross COuntry ski competition concludes today in brookvale

It was another great day in Brookvale today. Jeremy Jones finished his 5th Canada Games with a great 5km ski. All other athletes competed in the 4x5km mixed relay. This was a great way to end an amazing week as one big supportive team. Skiers who took the early laps greeted the finishers at the line with NL flags flying proudly. Cheers and hugs were abundant at the end of the race, a testament to the friendships made at these games. After spending some time to take some last photos and packing gear to return, the team spent time enjoying some other competition. Well done Team NL X-Country Ski team on a great Canada Games!

Tipple draws admirations from fans

A tough morning for our TeamNL male curlers but a successful spiel.

Unfortunately the boys struggled early in today’s game. Despite being down 4 - 0 after the second end, our curlers hung in there overcoming adversity and battled to the final end. They certainly picked it up a notch in the second half.

Our TeamNL male curlers entered the games the 8th seed. Success is improving on your previous performance. The boys improved their final standing by finishing 6th overall. They know they are right there with the other teams and certainly gained the respect of their fellow competitors.

The games are a moment in time. These athletes have long curling careers ahead and the memories gain here at the games will be forever cherished!

The boys received a ton of support from TeamNL mission volunteers, fellow athletes and coaches, friends and family. This support lifted the boys when they were down and helped the proud moments to be prouder. Go TeamNL Go!!!

Badminton match comes down to final points

Todays matches at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre came down to a nail biter between TeamNL and Team Nunavut. The team played well through all 3 rounds and all were incredibly close. Unfortunately, TeamNU squeaked out ahead for the victory. TeamNL faces off against TeamNT again tomorrow morning at 9am in their team placement encounter.

Figure skating team takes on charlottetown and cheers on team nl teammates

Artistry moved from the ice to painting and off-ice conditioning was a fun, energetic session of Zoomba!  Throughout the day the skaters explored Charlottetown and the Athletes’ Village.

They stopped by the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre to take in a few matches of badminton to cheer on their teammates and enjoy the Games experience as fans! We played some fun and highly competitive games of table tennis  at the entertainment centre!

On this beautiful, sunny day they also enjoyed a leisurely  walk around the waterfront and learned more about historic Charlottetown. The highlight of the day was a visit with the therapy dogs where the skaters shared lots of cuddles and snuggles with their new furry friends!

This week we saw all of our skaters at their best! Many new personal best scores were achieved. Our team came prepared and ready to compete with the best in Canada. Huge congratulations to the athletes, their coaches and our Games Coaching and Management Team. Figure Skating has enjoyed a long and successful Games history since winning our first medal at the inaugural Games held in 1967 in Quebec City. Maddox’s Gold along with Lily and Mark’s Bronze brings Figure Skating’s Games medal total to 14!

Our skaters are pumped for the glow dance tonight and celebrating a very successful Games. Thank you Team NL Mission Staff for your dedication to sport and your support of the skaters and all athletes of Team NL!

beauty day at snowboard big air

Team NL Snowboard athletes Justin Motty, Caleb McDonald, Finn Howell, and Liam Fenske-Allison really showed their athleticism today at the Canada Games Big Air comp. After competing and training for 6 days straight, they hiked to the top of the course and charged the jumps at full speed. They persevered through some hard knocks in the warm up and were able to find control in the air during the judged runs by trusting their bodies and finding flow. A wide variety of Newfoundland & Labrador supporters came out to experience the event.
