It was a very busy day yesterday with competition in full swing.  Our athletes, coaches and managers have been doing a great job of keeping up with all the demands placed on them.  Juggling meals and transport times together with competition schedules at this multi-sport event is not easy.  Well done to you all as you navigate your way through the week.  We had some especially good performances yesterday.  Remember to remain focused on the events ahead of you and have fun.  We are so very proud of you.

Lastly, I must tell you that I have had several reports from volunteers who have specifically commented on how well behaved and respectful our Team NL contingent is.  Well done!

In a bit of a surprise, Noah Bolton was advanced in the 1500m, competing in the bottom bracket semi-final. From there, he advanced into the final, with an overall ranking of 47th. Coach Sharon Karn remarked that he was skating smoothly today, and making clean passes where other skaters had to try and catch up to him. With the 1500m now in the books, Noah turns to the 500m and 1000m events next. 

It was another exciting day today on the basketball court. Despite losing 53-26 to Quebec, the team continues to gel as a group and have a no quit mentality. 

The team really pulled together after the first quarter. They kept the game very tight against a powerful team and kept it to a low scoring affair through the 3rd and 4th quarter. 

The team want to say a huge thanks to the other Team NL athletes for coming out to support them today.  They will wrap up the round robin tomorrow at 1:00 against Saskatchewan. 

The NL Ladies Curling Team lost a heart breaker today to Team BC by a final score of 7-5.  The girls played well throughout the game and had Team BC on the ropes.  But by only inches Team NL ticked a guard on their final shot in the 7th end, resulting in BC coming up with a big steal!

The Girls will be back on the ice tomorrow (Wednesday) with a 

2 pm game against Team North West Territories!  Good Luck Team NL!

After a true Newfoundland weather day for Monday’s sprint (although luckily the rain did fall downwards instead of sideways), the Biathlon team welcomed the sunshine for Tuesday’s pursuit race. Both men’s and women’s teams put in excellent performances and truly leaving it all on the course, embodying the Team NL mantra “your best - nothing less”.

The biathlon team was excited to have so many mission staff come to cheer them on in Brookvale and experience how exciting their sport is! The grit, determination, and focus of the athletes was on full display. Tomorrow is a rest day for the team before they prepare for Thursday’s Individual race - the longest of the disciplines where the men will ski 12.5km and women will ski 10km. They’ll shoot 4 times and accuracy is the most important here as penalties are 1 minute instead of ~30 seconds for a penalty loop.

The team event has started and both team NL boys and they are off to a good start. NL girls played team BC first and lost the encounter, however Ciela Libid had a great performance taking a game in her singles match. So far the girls are 1-2 with another match remaining tomorrow. The boys are off to a 2-2 start in the team event and had their best matches yet against a close loss to Nova Scotia. More to come for them tomorrow as well!

In Team NLs final game of the round robin, a matchup to decide first and second place in Pool C , it was NL who came out on top with a big 8-2 win over  Yukon. Elliot Wright sent a bullet to the top shelf on an early first period power play on a lovely feed from ‘Bob’ Ben O’Brien and Team NL didn’t look back. Caylem Blake later added another power play marker after goalie Carter Arnold stopped tournament leading scorer Gavin Mckenna on a shorthanded breakaway making it 2 -0. This was one of several outstanding saves Arnold had in the game. Ty Peddigrew continued his hot hand with another pair; one on a beautiful setup from Seymour, and the other short handed. Wright would later add two more to complete the hat trick with the new twig he just purchased. Blake added his second while Strong rounded out the scoring. The defence were able to limit Mckenna to two assists in this one. This sets up the qualifying game verses Nova Scotia tomorrow night at the Maclauchlan Arena in Charlottetown at 8pm NL time to see who will move on to the quarter finals. Let’s go Team NL!
