1980s

The 1980s were a dynamic decade for the Newfoundland and Labrador Games, with both summer and winter editions offering youth athletes a platform to shine. Starting with the 1980 Summer Games on the Burin Peninsula, athletes from across the province competed in a variety of sports, including track and field, swimming, and soccer.

The 1982 Winter Games in Labrador City and Wabush marked a significant event, highlighting winter sports like skiing, hockey, and curling. This northern setting showcased the province’s rugged beauty and emphasized the importance of winter athletics in fostering regional pride.

1984 saw the Summer Games held in Botwood and Bishop’s Falls, which expanded the reach of the Games, allowing more athletes to participate. These games continued to build on the strong foundation of youth sports participation, contributing to the province’s growing athletic community.

1986 featured the Winter Games in Corner Brook, another strong showcase of Newfoundland and Labrador’s love for winter sports. These games fostered camaraderie, community spirit, and athleticism.

The decade concluded with the 1988 Summer Games in Mount Pearl, which became a memorable highlight for both athletes and spectators. These Games brought even more attention to youth sports, emphasizing community involvement and athletic development.
