Jennifer Bennett (Pasadena) – Jennifer has been one of the most dedicated athletes on our team as she has not missed a single tournament, camp, or practice since February 2010. She was a part of the Provincial Team at both the 2010 Atlantic Championships in Halifax and the 2010 National Championships in Calgary. As well she captained the girls team at the North American Team Championships in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Jennifer finished 2nd in Qualifying. Under the coaching of Ed Humber, Jennifer has shown a great amount of improvement over a short period of time and plans to continue to work hard and improve more leading up to the games.
Laura Blundon (Bloomfield) – Laura came onto the provincial scene when she made the Eastern Team for the 2010 NL Winter Games. She help lead that team to a silver medal, as well as winning a bronze medal in U17 Girls Singles. Laura was a part of the Provincial Team that traveled to Baltimore, Maryland, USA in November. Since first learning about the Canada Games program last February at the Eastern Camp in Port Rexton she has missed just one qualifying tournament. Laura has proved to be one of our most dedicated athletes making to 2 and 3 hour trips on the weekends to train and play in tournaments.
Elizabeth Hicks (Carbonear) – Elizabeth is the most experienced athlete on the girls team, she has played in a number of NLTTA tournaments over the past few years beginning playing Table Tennis as a U11. At the NL Winter Games she led Team Avalon to a bronze medal as well as winning another bronze medal in U14 Singles. Elizabeth has shown a lot of dedication during the qualifying period missing just one qualifying event. She was also a part of the Provincial Team at both the 2010 Atlantic Championships in Halifax and the 2010 National Championships in Calgary. As well she competed at the North American Team Championships in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. With the help of Coach Dave Milley in the Carbonear Club, Elizabeth finished 1stin the Qualifying.
Brianna Warren (Alternate) (Triton) – Brianna will serve as the alternate on this years Canada Games Team. She trains in Triton with her father Mark who is also the Central regions head coach. Brianna began training with the Provincial Teams Central and Western athletes on a fill in basis at practices in Springdale because of her eligibilty for the 2015 Canada Games, but in January she began to attend the Pasadena practices as well when she was named Alternate for the girls team after there was a shift in the girls roster. Brianna is a hopeful for the 2015 Canada Games and we hope this experience will help give her a shot at the Team in 2015.
Nick Buckle (Springdale) – Nick has been around the Newfoundland and Labrador Table Tennis scene since 2006. Perhaps the most experienced athlete on our team, Nick has been to a total of 4 National Championships (Edmonton 2007, Halifax 2008, Trois-Rivieres 2009, and Calgary 2010), and 3 Atlantic Championships (Charlottetown 2008, Paradise 2009, and Halifax 2010) and has the most wins outside of the province of all the Juniors currently on our team. He also captained our boys team at the North American Team Championships in Baltimore, Maryland, USA in November. Nick has been the definition of dedication over the past number of years, rarely missing a tournament anywhere, including taking the initiative to plan his own trips to Nova Scotia a couple of times to take part in their tournaments. Nick deservingly finished 1st in qualifying but was always there to lend a hand to help his colleagues improve.
Adam Drover (Bay Roberts) – Adam first cracked a roster spot on the Provincial Team at the 2010 Atlantic Championships in Halifax. He was also a part of the team at the 2010 Nationals Championships in Calgary. Adam took advantage of the Canada Games High Performance Program and traveled to St.John’s on Thursday nights to work with personal trainer Jerome Brennan. The physical training benefited Adam a great deal as he began pushing the top juniors in the Province. Adam finished 2nd in Qualifying. He was also a part of the team at the North American Team Championships in Baltimore, Maryland, USA in November.
Robert Humber (Pasadena) – Robert came into qualifying as an athlete who while new to the U18 age group was on the brink of beating some of our top juniors. He had been a part of our Provincial Team before as a U13 in 2008 at the National Championships in Halifax and rejoined the team 3 times this past year at the Atlantic Championships in Halifax, National Championships in Calgary, and the North American Team Championships in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He finally got those big wins this year also at the Central Open when he beat 3 of the top Juniors in the Province and also some big names in the Senior events. He qualified 3rd and had to win right up to the last tournament, this proved to pay off when in Baltimore he helped bring our team back from some big defecits in pressure situations (many of his matches in these situations went to 5 games).
Michael Rayel Jr. (Alternate) (Clarenville) – Michael has been seen at many of the NLTTA tournaments over the past couple of years. His athleticism, dedication and sportsmanship make him a model athlete. If an injury occurs and Michael is called upon our team will not be at any disadvantage as Michael has the highest winning percentage outside of the province out of all the Juniors currently on our team. Michael began playing for our Provincial Team this year at the Atlantic Championships in Halifax as well as at the North American Team Championships in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. Michael joined a long list of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians when he won perhaps one of the greatest awards in Table Tennis in Canada last May when to nobodys surprise he was awarded to Mo Mohammed Award for most Sportsmanlike athlete at the Atlantic Championships.
